Gayatri Mantra

The Gayatri Mantra is considered as the essence of the Vedas. Veda means knowledge, and this prayer fosters and sharpens the knowledge-yielding faculty. As a matter of fact, the four core-declarations enshrined in the four Vedas are implied in this Gayatri Mantra.

The Gāyatrī, also known as the Sāvitrī Mantra, is a highly revered Mantra from the Rig Veda (Mandala 3.62.10), dedicated to Savitr, the Sun Deity. Gāyatrī is the name of the Vedic meter in which the verse is composed. Its recitation is traditionally preceded by Om and the formula bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ, known as the mahāvyāhṛti, or "great (mystical) utterance". Sage Vishvamitra is said to have created the Gayatri Mantra.

Devanagari

English Transliteration:

om bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ

tatsaviturvareṇyaṃ

bhargo devasyadhīmahi

dhiyo yo naḥ prachodayāt

– Rigveda 3.62.10

 English Translation:

Let us meditate (dhīmahi) upon the Parambrahma (tat), who is the cause of all causes (Om), and the destroyer of all existence in the universe (bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ). As the independent source of all energy and life (bhargo), He is the shining (devasya) Supersoul of the Sun (savitur). Let us use our intelligence (prachodayāt) to reach the transcendental world.
